If a burner sparks weakly and lights late on a damp Santa Monica morning but behaves by the afternoon, the spark hardware is going rather than gone. If it has stopped sparking at any hour, damp is no longer the explanation.
What marine air goes for first
Salt reaches the small steel long before it reaches anything expensive: the spark electrode and its lead, the screws under a burner cap, the brackets carrying a hood liner. Those give out early on the streets north of Montana and anywhere a window stays open to the water, and they happen to be the cheap parts.
Three patterns separate them from the kitchen side. Ignition that drags in the morning and behaves after lunch is damp bridging a spark path that has already corroded. A burner that lights and then wanders is usually debris in the ports rather than anything the sea did. A hood that whines has a bearing; a hood that rattles has a fixing.
Replacing rather than cleaning
A corroded electrode cleans up and will spark again for a season. That is worth doing once on a part otherwise sound, and not worth doing twice: pitting leaves a surface that holds the next lot of salt faster than the first. Over any five-year stretch in a kitchen this near the water, a fresh electrode and lead is simply the cheaper line.
The same reasoning runs up the machine. Fastenings that have begun to bloom get changed while the panel is already off, not brushed and left. A blower wheel thrown out of balance by corrosion is corrected with a wheel. None of that calls for the gas supply to be opened or for anyone to be on a roof, which is why a coastal visit is rarely the long one.
