Why access changes the appointment

Canyon dust and burner ports
Hill and canyon air carries grit and, after a dry spell, fine ash. It settles on the cooktop and works its way into the slots around the burner head. A ring starved that way stops burning evenly: the flame goes soft and yellow on one side, and lights later than its neighbours.
When the cooktop is stone cold, lifting the cap and clearing what you can see is fair game, and so is checking that it drops back flat with no rock in it. If the flame is still lazy afterwards, leave it: the ports need clearing properly, with the burner apart on the bench.

Only two of the four lights worked and they buzzed. Not the bulbs: the little transformer in the canopy had cooked itself. He swapped it and re-seated the sockets, then took the baffles away to degrease.
