Wind, dampers and the noise at night
Evening air comes down off the slope here with some force, and the place it finds first is whatever flap sits at the end of the kitchen extraction. That flap is meant to swing open on airflow and fall shut behind it. Once its edge is loaded with grease, or the spring behind it has tired, wind lifts it and drops it, which is the knock people ring about at eleven at night.
The useful question is when the noise happens. With everything switched off, it is weather at the outlet, and it is a fitting problem. While the hood is running, it is the hardware — an unbalanced wheel, a bearing, or a length of duct that has worked loose from its collar. That one distinction separates a nuisance from a repair before anything is opened. Nobody needs to go outside and up to look at the outlet.
What a long cold run does to extraction
Lots up here are generous, which means the path from the hood to open air can be long and can pass through space nobody heats. Steam leaving a busy cooktop cools along that run, and what condenses takes grease out of the air with it and lays it down on the walls of the duct rather than in the filters you can see.
So a hood that sounds perfectly healthy while the kitchen takes twice as long to clear is a normal complaint here, and the filters look innocent because they mostly are. What is measured on the visit is what the hood is moving against, not what it sounds like from the other side of the room.
