What Your Hood Is Allowed to Vent Through in a Bel-Air or Palisades Fire Zone: Ember-Resistant Caps
In a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone the exterior termination over a Wolf hood has to resist ember intrusion, using noncombustible mesh between 1/16 and 1/8 inch or a vent tested to ASTM E2886. That screen plus cooking grease is why a hood that once pulled well stops pulling.

“The hood runs but it has stopped pulling.” The blower hums on every speed and moves almost nothing off the cooking surface, and on windy evenings the damper bangs all night. Above Sunset, the first place to look is not the blower and not the baffles. It is the last few inches of duct, outdoors, where the cap is.
That is a different starting point from the one most troubleshooting lists give, and it is a consequence of where these houses sit rather than of anything Wolf built.
Why this address produces it
Bel-Air, Brentwood and Pacific Palisades are mapped by LAFD Fire Zone History within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone of the City of Los Angeles. California’s wildland-urban-interface construction standards require vents in those zones to resist ember and flame intrusion: corrosion-resistant noncombustible mesh with openings no smaller than 1/16 inch and no larger than 1/8 inch, or a listed vent tested to ASTM E2886.
That rule moved house recently. For the 2025 code cycle the Building Standards Commission relocated the provisions formerly in Chapter 7A of the California Building Code into the new California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, Title 24 Part 7, effective 1 January 2026, with the technical requirements carried forward. Confirm your own parcel’s zone designation, and if you are pulling a permit, ask the department directly whether the relocation changes anything for your application — that is a question for your plan checker, not for a repair technician.
Hancock Park is regulated differently and just as firmly. It is a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone with an adopted Preservation Plan published by LA City Planning, and properties are classified as contributing or non-contributing, with contributing properties subject to stricter exterior review. Cutting a new wall cap or roof jack into a period-revival front elevation is exactly the kind of visible alteration that goes to the board.
Two different rulebooks, one shared consequence: at these addresses, the exterior termination is not a detail an installer improvises.
The chain, from cause to complaint
Any screen placed in an exhaust path is a restriction, and grease-laden air is the one thing certain to close a fine mesh over time. The opening size that keeps embers out is also small enough to hold cooking residue, and once residue starts bridging the mesh the restriction compounds: the greasier it gets, the faster it gets greasier.
What the blower does next is fixed by physics. Static pressure rises, the wheel moves less air at the same speed, and the smoke that used to be captured rolls out at the front edge instead. The owner responds by running it flat out all evening, which is louder, hotter for the motor and no more effective.
There is a second branch. Faced with a fire-zone termination detail or, in Hancock Park, a board review, owners frequently avoid cutting a new opening altogether. The duct is then routed through an existing chimney chase or an old vent path, which buys a long run with several elbows. Every elbow adds resistance and every elbow collects grease, so the same slow closure happens further upstream where nobody can see it. The third option, a recirculating hood over a high-output burner set, does not remove moisture or grease-laden vapour from the room at all, and produces precisely the complaints that get us called.
The banging damper belongs to the same story. A backdraft damper is holding against canyon wind pressure, and one chosen for a straightforward suburban run will chatter when the duct behind it is already restricted.
Ruling out the obvious first
Work outward, not inward, and do it in this order.
Pull the baffles and grease trays and wash them properly. This is free and it is the correct first step.
Then go outside with the hood running and look at the termination. Hold a light tissue near the cap, not near the hood: if the hood is loud inside but the cap barely moves the tissue, the restriction is downstream of the blower, and mesh or duct grease is the likely reason. Look at the damper blade while you are there and check whether it opens fully or flutters part-way.
Then get to the duct where you can. In Bel-Air kitchens the blower is often mounted up in the attic, which makes the horizontal run and its elbows reachable and inspectable. Grease in the first elbow after the blower tells you the whole run needs attention.
Only after all that does the equipment itself come into it: the blower wheel, loaded on its blades; the run capacitor, which produces a hum with poor airflow; the speed control; and the lighting circuit, where buzzing and half-dead lamps point at the driver rather than the bulbs.
When it stops being a homeowner job
Cleaning baffles is yours. Anything at the exterior termination in a fire zone is not, because the replacement has to be a compliant assembly rather than whatever fits the hole, and on a contributing Hancock Park property the visible change may need review before it is made at all. Duct cleaning inside a wall or an attic run, motor and capacitor work, and speed-control faults are all bench-and-meter work.
