What the money is actually buying
Not the igniter. A spark electrode is a small piece of ceramic and steel; the band exists because reaching it means the cap and head off, the fascia or the cooktop lifted on most installations, the lead traced back to the module, and the whole set of burners re-tested afterwards so you are not called back for the next one.
Where a job lands inside the band comes down to three things: how many burners are affected, whether the lead has to be replaced along its whole run, and whether the cooktop is built into stone that has to be worked around rather than lifted.
What gets replaced, and what does not
A single cracked or corroded electrode is replaced on its own. So is a chafed lead. The spark module is a separate part on a separate page, and it is only changed when the module is proved dead rather than assumed dead — swapping a module to find out is an expensive way to guess, and it sits in the same band anyway.
On the bluffs and out on the peninsula the tips corrode rather than crack. Cleaning a corroded electrode buys a few weeks; replacing it and the lead together is the repair that lasts, and doing both at once costs less than doing them a month apart.
